Attic insulation is probably the most important factor in keeping your home at a consistent temperature. In a city like Austin, with long, brutal summers (and not exactly the cheapest electricity), an insulated attic can save you thousands of dollars per year in energy bills.
Whether it’s an attic or crawlspace, SATX can ensure that you have the proper protection. We’ll do a free in home inspection, going over your best options, as well as costs and benefits. Then, we’ll remove old insulation and install new safely, quickly, and in a cost effective manner. When we leave, you’re attic will be sealed up, everything will be cleaned up, and your family, your wallet, and your HVAC system will be much happier!
Whether open cell or closed cell, spray foam has become the preferred insulation choice for homeowners and businesses. With spray foam insulation, you still get a high R-Value for temperature control, but there are other benefits as well.
Both open and closed cell will help to fill cracks and openings that fiberglass insulation would leave open. Closed cell is also a terrific moisture barrier, as well as keeping out pollutants. Another benefit of closed cell is that it adds rigidity to the structure of a building, meaning that it strengthens surfaces it’s adhered to.
Batt insulation is what you would typically see between framing, studs, and joists. It comes in pre-cut sheets and may or may not have cardboard on one side.
Batt insulation is what we would typically use inside a wall. It’s a very cost effective solution to insulating your home, as well as providing wall soundproofing between rooms.
Batt is most commonly fiberglass, but it can also be made with mineral wool, plastic fibers, or natural fibers. Batt also comes in many different R-Values to ensure your home is getting insulated properly in each space.
An insulation roll is very similar to batt, but it is manufactured in longer pieces.
Rolls can still be found in many different R-Values, just like batt. The main difference is the length.
For many jobs, such as floors and attics, rolls are ideal. They can cover a much longer area in less time than using multiple pre-cut batt pieces.
Generally, a roll will come in lengths from 20 to 40 feet. This makes it easier to roll it along a long area saving time and labor costs.
While rigid foam or foam board insulation has many practical uses, this type is also used in ventilation systems. This is because of it’s ability to withstand high levels of heat.
But even if you’re not insulating air ducts, foam board can be perfect for many applications. It’s great for basement or attic areas that you aren’t going to cover with drywall.
And because of it’s density, foam board insulation can still provide a very high R-Value while taking up only a fraction of the space.
We use the term R-Value multiple times when talking about what products to use to insulate your home. So what does it mean?
In basic terms, R-Value is basically a performance gauge for insulation. The higher the R-Value, the better it works to insulate. Higher R-Value insulation will be more expensive, so there’s a chart and map that help homeowners understand what level they should use in their home.
