What Are The Most Common Types of Sheetrock Damage and Drywall Repair?
Anything that has to do with damaged sheetrock, we’ve encountered at one point or another. From small holes to entire ceilings, and everything in between.
One thing we’ve found in Austin is that many companies won’t take on smaller repair jobs. Have a small crack in your ceiling or wall? Good luck getting someone to your home to fix it.

1. Small Drywall Hole
A small drywall hole is probably the most common drywall repair call we get in Austin. Most people don’t know how fragile sheetrock is until they accidentally put something through it. Then they realize that it has a consistency a little stronger than cardboard.
Our repair specialists can generally fix these small holes without too much fuss. This also means less cost to the customer.
If the hole is small enough, we can just fill it with compound instead of having to cut a patch. Then we let it dry, sand, and finish it.
At that point, we can texture match with the surrounding wall. Or we can leave it smooth and finished, ready to be painted. Many homeowners and renters choose to do this portion themselves to save money. But if you do wish to have us paint after we patch your drywall hole, having the correct paint will incur less charges.
2. Large Hole in Sheetrock
Larger holes in sheetrock can be a bit of a bigger project. But nothing our professionals can’t generally finish in a day or less. When we’re doing online quotes for large sheetrock damage, it helps to put a ruler or something in the photo for a size reference. This way we can get an idea of how long it will take us to float and tape, as well as add texture, if necessary.
Larger holes in sheetrock can occur just as easily as smaller damage. The hole in this photo was where a customer simply stumbled and fell. As you can see, the wall didn’t offer much support.
Repairing large sheetrock damage requires the damage to be cut evenly, then replaced. After we replace the damaged section, we float, tape, and finish. Afterwards it’s up to the homeowner to decide if we’re going to match drywall texture and finish with painting.
As with smaller repairs, having the paint on hand will cost less than if we have to make an extra trip to purchase it.
3. Poorly Installed Drywall Falling or Sagging
Although it may not seem extremely difficult to install sheetrock on your own, it’s very easy to hang incorrectly. Many of the calls we get for drywall repairs in Austin are to fix something that was done incorrectly. Whether done by the customer, or a previous homeowner, sagging drywall can make any space look very bad. And considering the price per square foot for real estate, nobody wants to make a room feel smaller.
There are some cases where the drywall is simply very old and needs to be replaced. This is common in areas that get a lot of moisture like garages.
Another common reason for sagging or falling sheetrock on ceilings is not using the correct thickness. Builders and home remodelers have been known to try to save money by using sheetrock that’s too thin on the ceilings. Then in a few years, your ceiling starts looking like the interior of a car from the early 70s.

4. Bad Float and Tape
Another extremely common problem in Austin is sheetrock with bad tape. We have no idea why, but we get so many calls from customers who have sheetrock tape peeling away their paint. Or as in the photo, just a horrible float and tape job to begin with.
Drywall seam repairs are some of the most common in the industry. This almost always is a result of an inexperienced installer or finisher doing the job.
Many homeowners attempt to hang sheetrock on their own, thinking that it’s all just measuring, cutting, and hanging. The problem is, finishing is by far the hardest part of installing drywall.
If it’s not finished correctly, it will end up causing problems. They may not occur immediately, but sometime in the future you’ll be searching Google for local drywall contractors to come do some repairs.
5. Sheetrock Removed for Plumber or Electrician
It’s a simple fact of life that the longer you own your home, the more you’ll end up repairing. Ask anyone who’s been a homeowner for a few decades. It’s very likely that there are very few areas of their home that they haven’t had to do some work on.
In the case of plumbing needing replaced or electrical issues, you’re probably going to call an expert. They’re going to come over and promptly start cutting away at your beautiful sheetrock.
Once they’re finished, it’s the homeowner’s job to figure out how to get that new plumbing covered with a wall again.

6. Bad Drywall Finish and Texture
Just as we said that bad float and tape can ruin your walls and ceilings, bad finish can be worse. Many homes will have some sort of roughness or bumps on their walls. This is called texture.
Some of the most common types of drywall texture are orange peel and knockdown. These are very popular because it’s difficult to notice any imperfections or damage due to the roughness. Often landlords or homeowners with children prefer these because they mask damage.
Other finishes are smooth, such as level 3 finish, level 4 finish, or level 5 finish are much more difficult to do perfectly. The higher the finish, the more imperfections will show. These can be in the sheetrock seams, or because of imperfect framing. Or because someone inexperienced attempted them.

7. Drywall Cracks or Ceiling Cracks
Ceiling cracks in South Austin are about as common as hot summers and bad traffic. We get calls all the time from customers asking us to repair cracks in their ceilings or walls. While this may seem like a simple job, often there’s a bit more too it.
The main reason for ceiling cracks or walls cracking is due to the foundation of the home shifting. Many homes in Austin are built on slopes or hills, which can cause foundation issues.
Another big problem in Austin is the very limited use of gutters. Gutters and downspouts just aren’t that common here, most likely due to the limited amount of rain. But the issue is, it still does rain in Austin, and when it happens, it’s often very extreme. Over the years, that rain running off the roof can cause erosion, which can allow your home to move slightly. This is where you get the ceiling cracks.
We can certainly repair these, as well as match texture, paint, and popcorn ceiling. But if the underlying problem isn’t resolved, the crack repair will only be temporary.
8. Large Hole in Ceiling Sheetrock
Another very common issue we deal with is calls for a hole in the ceiling. The number one way this happens is from someone stepping through the ceiling.
The issue is that most attics are simply 2×6 boards with fiberglass insulation between them. Below that, there’s nothing but your sheetrock ceiling and the room below it. Someone will be walking around in the attic on the rafters, then lose their balance and fall through the ceiling. Or simply forget and step in a bad spot.
